Facts: 1. If it was easy to do as pure neural network, OpenAI probably would have done it. 2. The closest I can find is linked, and is a hybrid system, NOT a pure CNN. 3. The current paper misrepresented what they did, as if it were not a hybrid.https://www.nature.com/articles/s42256-019-0070-z …

It must be straightforward to train a neural network to solve a Rubiks cube in the abstract? Learning only from physical moves and observations only would be more difficult though, because it would require an infeasible number of steps.
