[thread] A fascinating Turing award lecture. What's intrigues me is that Yoshua Bengio (see from here https://youtu.be/llGG62fNN64?t=2448 …) believes in compositionality, but not in a combination of good old search-based approaches with neural networks.

GOFAI is the most non-general AI model in existence. A symbol is specific (the opposite of general) by definition: it stands for something in particular. How anyone (let alone an expert) can claim that it has a role to play in artificial *general* intelligence is beyond absurd.

It's not so simple, b/c you can manipulate symbol vectors. This is what we do already. There is inference that can be used with such systems too. Some of it is trained end-to-end, but, e.g., I know at least one scenario (in speech rec) where end-to-end doesn't work on its own.
