I think it requires guarded language by both. Skeptics can say “I don’t see X is possible!” and that raises a challenge. If particular skepticism motivates researchers, then it has impact (even if hard to measure).

Precise optimism is useful and falsifiable. Vague optimism is for fund raising. I would preach agnosticism. I search for limits and potentials. Predicted limitations and possibilities are interesting fodder for research if precise.
