advocates of #machinelearning, I am told that you all know that (current) #ML is limited. fair enough. but which limits are you willing to *publicly* acknowledge?https://twitter.com/NotSimplicio/status/1173373706674085888 …

There is a subtle but important difference between a) all we need is more data and more compute (which I don't know if any expert believes) and b) all we need are general methods like search and learning that leverage data and compute (which is what Richard Sutton argues).

There are theoretical impediments that even "general methods" cannot circumvent. If you search for a common point of two parallel lines, you can have the best search-and-learning method in the world and you won't find one. ML confronts such impediments to reaching GAI.

The perception of the general public will tend to lag. Many people think Big Data is algorithmic methods to decipher Complex systems. Anyone working in the complexity sciences will be dumbfounded with that perception.

maybe it would be better for us all if "deep learning" wasn't called intelligence at all (what is intelligence?) to prevent confusion. Deep learning (a generalization itself) doesn't have to be able to reason to be useful. Deep learning does need more data and more compute.

A new paradigm exists for
#NLU based on contemporary linguistics of RRG, providing meaning for machines. That is a limitation for DL. No meaning, no common sense or reasoning when it comes to languageThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

There is not enough corpora - ever - language is infinite. Corpora of billions or trillions of words is miniscule. Bolder steps are indeed required to do what the brain does with language and provide meaning.
