"DL doesn’t recognize a dog as an animal composed of parts like a head, a tail, and four legs" Broadly uncontroversial 'AI is not all that' as usual, except this part is off - DL does find that dogs are composed of parts, right? Using https://fredhohman.com/summit  can even confirm: https://twitter.com/nxthompson/status/1171856342136623109 …pic.twitter.com/ba5XLjjzbY

And people are researching compositionality + DL: https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.09213  https://arxiv.org/abs/1605.00482  So it's a bit misleading to say "DL is missing what linguists call compositionality", no @GaryMarcus ? As opposed to DL is usually not designed to learn compositionality, maybe.

Lastly, there are cases in which DL systems know that eg 'a dog is an animal': https://arxiv.org/abs/1811.07125  Or here is compositionality + hierarchy: https://arxiv.org/abs/1706.02003  Though I do wonder why we don't leverage hierarchy and compositionality more... maybe in future, who knows.

My feeling is that the tasks we currently focus on are simply too easy/don't require it. If imagenet can be solved on texture/local features alone, why bother using compositionality?

because it is not working for language understanding, flexible reasoning, high-level planning, etc. imagenet addresses just a tiny slice of general intelligence.

To be fair, ImageNet is kind of an old dataset. Newer ones In NLP (http://ai.stanford.edu/blog/beyond-local-pattern-matching/ …) as well as CV (https://visualcommonsense.com/ ) are far closer to needing common sense. tbh people have simply not tried to address QA of the difficulty posed in article, as far as I can tell...
