It is so subtle I've never quite grasped it. 'Endowing machines with common sense and deep understanding' in the obvious way was tried for 50 years (it's the obvious thing to try first) and didn't work. What's different about your proposal now? (ps. I'll read the book...)

Agree, supervision is present, but how? Kids don't create a 'dog's representation by hearing the word in the presence of the animal: they associate the label to a representation they *already had created* by other mechanisms; plus, supervised information comes also in the *input*

ostensive learning through labels is a small part of language but it certainly does happen. and people can learn all kinds of things if they get direct feedback on their errors. supervised learning exits; but it’s just one mechanism of learning among many.

Might the supervision come in the form of being told by an adult/expert/role model/teacher/etc that "this is an X", with the result being the student learns that the label "an X" applies to the example in question (that example being modelled by however much innate machinery)?
