Think it’s a mistake to think in a zero-sum way like this. There are income as well as substitution effects. DeepMind’s success in reinforcement learning lends cause to more investment in adjacent fields...(and has already done so).

“Every dollar invested in (deep) reinforcement learning is a dollar not invested somewhere else” - is literally the definition of a zero-sum game. What have I missed?

Yeah I think my contention with the diversification argument is that DeepMind’s success in RL has made the pie bigger for everyone in AI (including those not doing RL). Maybe I missed some nuance, but his “dollar spent elsewhere” thing doesn’t really seem to make sense.

@GaryMarcus has got it all wrong. Every $ spent by DeepMind in efforts that they make public is one less $ spent by other researchers exploring the same path. Example: Do you see other research groups working to solve Go? No, because it already has been solved by DeepMind.

empirically their highly visible work certainly has not deterred OpenAI from following a similar path

That's because OpenAI's charter was to make sure they weren't someone not invited to the party. Musk and others put $1B into OpenAI so they wouldn't be left out of the Deep Learning explosion.

it’s also a billion $ + refutation if your assertion, given that they are free to spend the $ more or less as they choose

They spent it in areas where they felt the most promise at the time. That just so happens to be Deep Reinforcement Learning.
