Fundamental science costs a lot of money and it's not immediately monetizable. Besides, how much of this was spent on TPU cycles? Furthermore, this "information" discourages everyone else from investing in AGI research.

are you proposing that the world cover up deepmind’s economics in order to stave off an AI winter?

I'm saying that DeepMind's horrible short term numbers isn't a bad thing. OpenAI likely has similar economic numbers. Should we also examine the cost of CERN's Large Hadron Collider?

Finding the Higgs boson was never a commercial enterprise, and was based on confirming a missing piece in a well established theoretical/scientific framework developed over the better part of a century. Hardly a good comparison point.

Okay. Then what about the Human Genome Project that cost $2.7b? It was in a race with Celera (a commercial venture) to decode the human DNA. There are plenty of more fundamental science projects that are less abstract than High Energy Physics.

For the record, I have no problem with 1b/year being spent on AI, I just don’t think so much of it should be spent specifically on DRL, and think the wrong things are being optimized for.

Why should you care? It's not public money. What you should care about is the non-existent money allocated by the US government on AI projects.
