"Very far" meaning competitive with a normal human. That's sufficient for general intelligence, after all, don't all humans have general intelligence and not just the Go masters?
does a normal human need 53k games to reach intermediate level? would they be able to generalize to a board of a different size or shape, without retraining from scratch? intermediate level play on a single task w vast corpus does not establishes intelligence in a human sense.

In regards as to what humans are capable of, that's still an unresolved problem. But human cognition certainly *does not* contain the kind of symbolic manipulation machinery that's found in digital computers. We can emulate the manipulations, but the mechanisms are *not* innate.
