Focusing on SOTA here misses the entire point. The point is that plain deep learning can get very far even in games that appear to require tree search algorithms.

You don't need to defend search procedures using SotA results. They are superior due to that they can work in open-ended environments. Even they perform worse for specific tasks, they are general and should be preferred for anything except very controlled environments.
