Don’t personally think that “soon” is even within the realm of possibility, if the benchmark is human-driver-equivalent safety across a wide range of driving scenarios, and it means say 18 months hence.

You don‘t get it. Elon‘s tweets are about motivation and vision (marginally shareholder‘s value, too). If you put it into perspective, plusminus five years does not matter much. Elon has a quite remarkable track record of achieving what he promises, a couple of years later.

He is always overly optimistic. That is part of the reason why he gets things done that nobody else can. And I suspect that this time, his prediction will age better than his previous predictions on self driving. There is no fundamental reason why it cannot be done.
