Also... playing chess is just an easier problem for computers, no?
Question is why; point is to understand better which tasks are easier for machines and which are harder, rather than to assimilate all problems together and assume falsely that progress on one entails progress on all.

A legitimate question, indeed. But do you think AI researchers are confused on this point? I like to use attached venn diagram; these distinctions are taught in Intro to AI classes, generally. Granted, people get pretty enamored by AlphaZero and start to speak as if it's more powerful that it is cause it solves Go AND Chess... but I think most AI researchers understand it won't go and solve self driving right now (anyone who has done RL or robotics will, anyway).
