Without wanting to "take sides" in the silly-yet-interesting debate/tweetfight between @GaryMarcus and @ylecun: when reading Gary's article it's worth keeping in mind that the dismissal of symbolic AI by many in deep learning is pretty much a reversal of 30 years ago.https://twitter.com/GaryMarcus/status/1068897657530138629 …

odd and perhaps mistaken claim. 30 years ago is precisely the last time time when proto-deep-learning advocates were writing papers about how (symbolic) linguistics was “alchemy”, just after the huge success in 1986 of the PDP volumes.

there was animus on both sides, but your underdog story isn’t entirely accurate, and the PDP books came out with guns drawn, directly attacking symbol-manipulation.

Replying to @GaryMarcus @ylecun
I guess that's what you do when you want to start a new research field - attack what you perceive to be the dominant approach/paradigm and its shortcomings?

yep, all sides have done that. (when i was young and naive in 2001 i tried hard to bring the fields together, counseling integration in the subtitle, and throughout the text, but people generally don’t note that aspect.)
