You obviously know much more about these episodes than I do - I'm at least one generation removed from these events, and young DL people today at least two. I just felt that perspective was missing in your article, and could help explain some of the bitter feeling.

For context, I "grew up" on the computational intelligence side, going to conferences such as WCCI, CEC, GECCO, IJCNN etc, where the accepted truth was that we started as a community of outcasts from the High Church of AI, where sermons were delivered in LISP.
