there was animus on both sides, but your underdog story isn’t entirely accurate, and the PDP books came out with guns drawn, directly attacking symbol-manipulation.

I guess that's what you do when you want to start a new research field - attack what you perceive to be the dominant approach/paradigm and its shortcomings?

yep, all sides have done that. (when i was young and naive in 2001 i tried hard to bring the fields together, counseling integration in the subtitle, and throughout the text, but people generally don’t note that aspect.)
