But this conversation is distracting: my simple original point is that there is a huge pile of money at national levels being poured into some very specific A.I. approaches...and that is a little concerning to me, not unlike what happened in Japan.

“Finding an eigenvector by recursive symbolic computation” is an *excellent* example of a complex algorithm that can be replaced with gradient descent.

Not to toot my own horn too much, but I did write a paper about computing eigenvectors by stochastic gradient descent: https://arxiv.org/abs/1806.02215 Turns out it's way, way less efficient than the power method.
