Anyone have a coherent explanation for how we think that doesn't involve symbol manipulation?
Symbol-manipulation = implementing abstract operations over variables, as in algebra, and using those operations to generalize to new instances. If nature is any example, DL probably don‘t need built-in symbol-manipulation to reach human level AGI that then could USE powerful symbol-manipulation systems, the same way as we humans (utilizing our brain-NN without symbol-manipulation hard-wiring) do.

It‘s not denial, not even a claim that symbol manipulation would be not useful or powerful. It‘s just a different focus.
