“I’m not saying I want to forget deep learning... But we need to be able to extend it to do things like reasoning, learning causality, and exploring the world .” - Yoshua Bengio, not unlike what I have been saying since 2012 in The New Yorker.https://www.technologyreview.com/s/612434/one-of-the-fathers-of-ai-is-worried-about-its-future/ …

Folks I have started a fresh thread with a synthesis of my too-longer for Twitter thoughts on this debate, tied to new a post on Medium:https://twitter.com/garymarcus/status/1068897657530138629?s=12 …

“The deepest problem with deep learning” & why it’s not good to confuse a snowplow & a school bus. Some reflections too long for Twitter on recent debate with @ylecun and others, w. additional discussion of ⁦@anh_ng8⁩ lab’s important recent results. https://link.medium.com/dHSKKYBsiS

There's a couple problems with this whole line of attack. 1) Saying it louder ≠ saying it first. You can't claim credit for differentiating between reasoning and pattern recognition. 2) Saying X doesn't solve Y is pretty easy. But where are your concrete solutions for Y?

But I did say this stuff first, in 2001, 2012 etc? Not about louder. And no, I don’t know how to solve the problems, but I have pointed to specific directions that are finally getting some air (explicit operations over variables, in particular) that for a long time were dismissed

Ideally, you'd be saying this through NeurIPS submissions rather than New Yorker articles. A lot of the push-back you're getting right now is due to the perception that you haven't been using the appropriate channels to influence the field.

Yoshua (and I, and others) have been saying this for a long time. The difference with you is that we are actually trying to do something about it, not criticize people who don't.

Actually, you have been criticizing me for saying it for a long time, and I certainly don’t think you were saying it in 2012.

My goodness folks... this is hardly a recent thing. Layered systems of a cognitive symbolic reasoning level with a lower level reactive, sub-cognitive, blackbox or zombie level of processing have been explicitly advocated by applied AI scientists for decades as I assume you know.

I'm not convinced with progress of DL and the direction that we r heading AI in. AI is not meant to outperform human on cat vs dog classification or outsmart human on digit recognitions. Let's use AI to identify new paradigms in every aspects that we never even think of.
