Anyone who thinks vision has already largely been solved in AI is kidding themselves. Object recognition ≠ scene comprehension.https://twitter.com/skeptoptimist/status/1031808308154261504 …

Agreed. The OpenAI Five project should not be about implementing AI vision (converting from pixels) and having the OpenAI team waste time on solving a problem that has already largely been solved.

You don't need to have vision solved. You stated OpenAI js "ducking some of the hardest problems like knowing what entities exist and how to segment them etc.", but that subset of vision (detection + segmentation of a discrete known number of object given sim access) is not hard

Not hard for supervised learning, or not hard for unsupervised/RL? And not hard because DOTA has simple graphics, or not hard period?

Not hard for supervised learning (still given sim + API or annotation). Object detection via supervised learning not hard period, nowdays.

That's a rather important caveat, is it not? @GaryMarcus core point was it was deemed important in the Atari world to not have to lots of image supervision, but for the agent to learn it from its own experiences. I *deeply* disagree agree that objection detection not hard period

TBC, not just object detection, but the whole semantic concepts that get built on vision and which are concepts heavily exploited by the DOTA NN architecture.

right, I took supervised learning to be a given - it's obviously not easy to learn unsupervised. In any case, this whole notion of 'comparable to human learning' is besides the point to me; nothing in AI is truly comparable, Atari included. The whole criticism is poorly motivated

no; humans represent an important benchmark. DoTA work is still interesting, but framing it as a competition with humans is misleading to the extent that they are playing different games.

'Comparable to human learning' and 'comparable to human performance given same inputs' is not the same thing. As I said, if all you want is inputs to be the same, then supervised learning + engineering can learn the pixels -> mapping, almost certainly.

As others noted learning pixels->mapping given no sim supervision is MUCH harder, but that bit is unrelated to objection that "framing it as aa competition with humans is misleading to the extent that they are playing different games."
