the problem is that there is a very large number of possible outlier cases, and the one bug at time solution isn’t leading to the kind of exponential reduction in intervention rate that we one might hope for.

I'm with you; and it's be hard to advocate slower progress. Still (and I personally love driving) .. I'd rather have to address the problem of improving the safety of driverless cars than to have to improve the safety of human drivers? .. and we only have to do the former, once?
