I think your post outlines very well what happened + people who thought it was going to be easy and didn't have the training data rushed in and sold crap to clients (who bought based on the hype). There are good products out there that account for things like context, negation...

Agreed that "the hype is over...Now we can start examining the middle-grounded grey area, instead of the hyper-inflated, frantic black and white zone." This leaves room for improvement to chatbots and NLP in the future, while still recognizing where we are today. A great read!
