The new paper from @DeepMindAI argues that combinatorial generalization must be a top priority for AI to achieve human-like abilities. The paper presents the "graph network" that enables manipulating structured knowledge and producing structured behaviors https://arxiv.org/abs/1806.01261

I wonder if that isn't a function of the tendency to stake grounds? Conv nets have lots of built-in structure, obviously, and in my conversations with Yann he's always recognized the importance of some structure.

I suspect the disagreement is regarding the *degree* of structure required. And when it's a question of degree, then the way to settle the debate is just to build things that lie at different points on the spectrum and see what degree of structure produces the best results.
