To be neuroscience nitpicky: recognizing faces and other complex visual objects is beyond the *primary* sensory cortex; they are the realm of higher-order visual areas such as fusiform face area. Though there are some pretty serious problems with the robustness of DNN object recognition, as the adversarial literature shows, and I’ve yet to see Alpha* demonstrate any transfer (eg to different sized board or variant with different rules), as a human would s/he mastered Go.
