I am NOT trying to hasten another AI winter; I want the field to stave one off, by reducing hype, & considering new models that incorporate symbol-manipulation and innateness (often too quickly dismissed). I want to more AI, not less, but I also want it to be robust.https://twitter.com/symplectic2025/status/1003207615915028480 …

@GaryMarcus You are now being equated a la Marvin Minsky, for hastening the 2nd AI Winter... Do you accept the crown? 🧐

Do you really think you are so unique or outstanding in calling for "new models that incorporate symbol-manipulation and innateness" & lots of other ideas, too, or is it just that you pitch this as a critique of DL?

i have been doing it for 25 years, against enormous resistance, some of which has been on display today.

I don't think it is necessary to pitch new ideas (or not so new, but still worth exploring) as critiques of "deep learning" which I think you use as a straw man. I think you are fishing for investors for some new startup. I object to your encouraging #AI denialism in NYT op-eds.

To each his own. I have been working on startups for for years, but making these arguments for 26, and they stem from my understanding of human cognitive development, which has been the main thrust of all of my work.

You have my deepest respect on all that. It's really the issue of denialism that I'm getting at. We face huge social, economic. political & security challenges from the rise of #AI, whether you think HLAI = 2029 or 2069. "It's all a lot of hype" is the wrong message.

Partly agree, though I think we should gear our policies around a realistic understanding the timing of various scenarios. More immediate problem is what do with unreliable AI, not superintelligence.
