Love this reply from @GaryMarcus on what it means for there to be "innate symbol processing" in AI, and why you might want that. Lots of ppl seem to act like it's some bizarre or exotic proposal. No -- innate symbol processing is all around us already!https://twitter.com/garymarcus/status/1003313796851617793 …

How about operating systems, word processors, spreadsheets; they are all written in languages that innately incorporate symbols. You got an OS that is end to end neural nets? I’d like to see how reliable it is.

Excel, OSs don’t seem like “AI” to me. i would be just as happy to use those as examples of what AI is NOT for someone unfamiliar with computing landscape. that’s the big scalable technological win for symbolic AI?

right, not to put words in his mouth but I understand @GaryMarcus to be advocating a hybrid approach: rather than completely asymbolic architectures for general AI, the idea is to incorporate the kind of innate symbolic processing that's in that sort of non-general software

so, when people ask, "what do you mean when you say you want us to include innate symbolic processing", the answer is to add in the kind of stuff that's in excel and OSs. (if i understand him right!)

blending best ideas from many places makes a lot of sense. but when i think of the scalable wins for symbolic AI i do come up a bit short, and i don’t consider OS or excel relevant unless symbolic AI now means “anything written in a programming language”. oh hey pytorch!

we may be agreeing then, since i too am not saying that excel is symbolic AI!

it does seem that deterministic rules (with no learning) are the best way to make sure that a system does exactly what its (human) designer expects it to do. the problem is that telling a system exactly what to do hasn't scaled up very well.

(I'm trying to find the most productive way to think about Excel in this context because I'm also not sure how it's relevant)

an intriguing learning from data example there is flash fill, which uses (symbolic) inductive logic programming to do a form of extrapolation that eludes deep learning. i discuss and give a reference in my medium post In Defense of Skepticism.

Flash fill over Clippy? He KNEW I was beginning to write a letter! ... i wasn’t 😀. seriously i do like brainstorming about AI that is part of personal computing (emphasis is too often on algorithms applied to big data which isn’t definitional to AI)
