i keep emphasizing symbol manipulation rather than symbols because all systems have symbols; they don’t all have operations over variables, type-token distinction, compositionality etc, as I argued in The Algebraic Mind

There are no symbols in the brain. Symbol manipulation is what the brain DOES, i.e., it's an external behavior. It is not what underlies its internal operation. As an example, there can be no AGI without unsupervised learning which requires no labels or symbols.

That view seems rather limited. Why couldn't symbols exist in the brain?
