The nasty little truth is that deep neural nets ARE symbolic systems, a million deep learning experts claiming otherwise notwithstanding. A DNN is just an expert system and the labels are symbols. This is one of the main reasons that DL has no role to play in AGI.
i keep emphasizing symbol manipulation rather than symbols because all systems have symbols; they don’t all have operations over variables, type-token distinction, compositionality etc, as I argued in The Algebraic Mind

There are no symbols in the brain. Symbol manipulation is what the brain DOES, i.e., it's an external behavior. It is not what underlies its internal operation. As an example, there can be no AGI without unsupervised learning which requires no labels or symbols.

That view seems rather limited. Why couldn't symbols exist in the brain?
