What exactly would be "falling"? Machine Learning is here to stay (foreseeably) in areas where it has had success (NLP, vision, etc.). I don't see Gary's approach of pointing out the limitations and overblown rhetoric as being remotely threatening to the field of AI as a whole.
biggest threat is that current approaches don’t deliver what has been promised, eg for driverless cars and robust conversational interfaces.
Will failure-to-deliver actually result in a "fall" or "winter"? The current approaches are widely and deeply implemented across huge industries with vast amounts useful applications. This will remain true even in the midst of sensationalism because it's still the best we have.
