      Largely, I think the idea of AI winters is BS. Grossly overstates the ability of funding bodies (VCs, academic, etc) to dictate the direction of technology. Take, e.g., the 1998 dotcom bubble & crash. *Actual* tech plugged along at likely same pace as it would anyway @GaryMarcus?pic.twitter.com/yw4E8dEd40

      That's a lame answer! 1. You know I'm familiar with the history! 2. History doesn't contain counterfactuals! 3. It's quite hard to point to a decade that was unproductive - just to decades where funding waned or focus roved around (productively, e.g. kernels).
