Largely, I think the idea of AI winters is BS. Grossly overstates the ability of funding bodies (VCs, academic, etc) to dictate the direction of technology. That's a lame answer! 1. You know I'm familiar with the history! 2. History doesn't contain counterfactuals! 3. It's quite hard to point to a decade that was unproductive - just to decades where funding waned or focus roved around (productively, e.g. kernels).

Don't get me wrong. I benefit from the funding. And from the public interest. And I might be a bit sad if 90% of it dissipated tomorrow. But would that really make any difference in the flow of technological development?! That's my Q
