It irks me to no end that some decide for others what the price that must be paid is. Unnecessary suffering for some hegemonic, perverse ‘normal’ is, well, unnecessary. Even worse when doctors, who are de facto authorities, decide for patients the ‘appropriate’ level of concern.

Power, trust, and vulnerability are big factors in all clinical encounters. Patients need to feel safe at a basic level, not viewed as anxious in the context of a hegemonic, make-believe ‘normalcy.’ CDC & OSHA have failed to update standard precautions, and this is consequential.

As some are pointing out, it's interesting Rachel Maddow feels the need to apologize for highlighting the lack of masks. It shows the strong pressure to fall in line with the narrative that no one needs to care about the pandemic anymore. She is right to push back.
