Public service announcement: "Doubting Thomas" -- a skeptic who refused to accept the extraordinary on faith alone and required empirical evidence -- is not a scientific put down. It's the job description.

Right on cue, I suppose. Dr Wolf today again accuses me of whitewashing gay history. In a tweet in this thread she also accuses me of homophobia. That's a new one. This would be a surreal amusement if the accusations weren't quite so serious.

A short thread on why Prof Zharkova's (of ) claims about the Sun's influence on Earth's climate are not to be treated seriously.

At least also talked to someone sensible: at the end of article says on a hypothetical grand solar minimum "will probably be no detectable effect on global climate."

It has been nice not to have seen a 'mini ice age' news story for a while. It was never going to last :-( It is of course irresponsible nonsense.

Walking along coastpath near Otterton. Bit blustery, but skylarks making themselves heard. Their song always raises my spirits

17 yrs ago as a PhD student in meteorology I worked a 2nd job at Naval Research Lab in DC digitizing photographs of the sun and running them through an IDL code to identify spatial variability features. Not my field but never dreamed I would see something like this. Wow

Can see my old house/shop (now a car park), and the church my uncle preached at (still there). Sadly we only had steel works trains going past when I was a kid.

The ground beneath my feet in this photo has seen daylight for only a matter of months over the last few hundred years. Normally the Sphinx sits here, but in late September 2018 it vanished for the second time in succession. An unprecedented event.

These maps show the clear change as the south of the UK is getting hotter. Our cold regions are shrinking with the increase in temperature creeping further and further north...
