Hidden Lake blue curls monitoring is one of my favorite trips of the year. The lake is still 85% full and that means fewer blue curls since they occur at the drying edge of the lake. The interns had a great day counting plants! #rareplantmonitoring #rareplant #iamabotanist

Some close up shots of Hidden Lake blue curls reveal glandular hairs that give the plant its mild vinegar scent. It smells like salt and vinegar chips to me! This annual is tinie tiny, but when in abundance you can smell the vinegar-like smell in the air. #rareplants

Today we had also had the treat of seeing hundreds, if not thousands of baby western toads. They were hopping all around the margins of Hidden Lake. Hidden Lake is an important breeding ground for these little ones. This one stood still long enough for me to catch a shot.

What kind of toad is this? Found on a hike in the San Gabriel mountains.
