... but what if I were to write a piece on compassion fatigue in game developers who have been abused by player bases and have seen their colleagues get abused ...

Did she ask a question? Do you have a direct, relevant answer? Good! Say it. Has she not asked you anything? Don’t just toss out random facts at a stranger. Conversation is curious about what the other person thinks and acknowledges their part and contribution in it.

Pssst... you know what a good rule of thumb is if you want to avoid mansplaining or uncomfortable conversations with women, including on Twitter? Blurting out facts about something at a person is not conversation. Especially when she didn’t ask a question.

People are saying this is ironic but also... is it? I feel like it takes guts to go to a rich people event and use that appearance to tell pretty much everyone around them that she is fighting to get them taxed :P

I really wish there was a way to engage with (north American) exercise culture that’s about celebrating what our bodies can do without the toxicity of pressure on what it looks like, hey.

This is how we change culture, what’s acceptable to say and who gets our open, public support. To say it with Rose’s words... “That is how we win. Not by fighting what we hate, but saving what we love.” ;)

Because when I was in a position where people piled on me - including important gamedevs - I wished for nothing more but to not feel like nobody was there to bat for me when I felt hurt. That’s what’s important to me, not what the shitty people think.

If these people want to pretend with their sad, miserable lives that me tweeting about them is joyful for them, fine. I don’t give a shit. I give a shit that the people hurt by their actions can SEE that others are willing to lend their voice to support them.

I have COMPLETELY stopped caring if shitty people get a kick out of me blocking them or tweeting about what they have to say - I literally don’t care. My decisions are made in accordance to my values and how important I feel it is to make the people around me feel supported.

So you can weigh that up when you see someone spewing hatred. Can you discuss the educational topic without giving them a platform? Good. Is there value in directly, openly opposing that person for the sake of the people you’re trying to protect? Worth considering. :)

It’s a tactic of toxic people to try and manipulate you out of doing good or acting according to your values by trying to use it against you, but we don’t do it for them, we do it for the people we want to support and who we want to see that we see them.

There’s a rule of thumb in activism where you don’t avoid doing something good for the marginalized or the causes you care about out of fear of what the opposition might do - you do it because it’s right. You don’t let them dictate your actions.

I try to avoid funneling people directly to these accounts and instead talk about the educational part without the original tweet, but sometimes showing support in direct, contextualized opposition to these people is really important for the people you’re trying to protect.

Follow-up discourse from yesterday: I understand the frustration with giving shitty people a platform to spew their shitty opinions on here even if it’s for the purpose of pushing back, but consider this: standing up against these people openly is an important form of support.

If you’re expecting a game to be down truly from scratch you have to play only new IPs made in proprietary engines. Which... means you’ll miss out on like... 95% of games. Comparing game animations doesn’t make you look as clever as you think.
