The article says that it was for 4 1-hour lessons, not $50 for 1 lesson. Coaching has shown to help improve kids confidence along with imparting important life skills like resource management, making decisions under pressure, right attitude etc.
I didn't get through WSJ paywall, got this info from Polish site who must've translated it wrong. This money and kid's time could've been easily used to coach him how to play IRL sports, speak in foreign languages or even how to make games. And I'm saying this as Fortnite fan.
The two aren't mutually exclusive, kids can do both. We have coaches all around the world as well. If you want to practice another language, improving at a game you enjoy at the same time sounds pretty good to me. Everyone feels different about coaching, totally fair.
