"So and so is off today but they really wanted to jump on this piece of content so we let them!" It's not supportive or empowering to let people work on their days/time off. It just means you don't enforce boundaries.

Games media is built on exploiting the passion, work ethic, and desperation of the workers who line the pockets of companies that consistently tell them they're struggling too much to treat them any better/pay them properly.

And let me not even get into the fact that the only thing shielding staff from even more crunch are freelancers willing to die for a few hundred dollars.

Also being independent does not make me or anyone immune to these issues because now I am just the boss AND the worker. It's a hard industry with no easy solutions. My beef is some of you won't admit there is a problem at all.

I saw a tweet of a journalist talking about working 12-13 hour shifts because they wanted to. They said no one was forcing them to and it was the opposite. Encouraging them not to. I guess in this situation I'm not sure who's at fault.

I'm conflicted with this. I hope to go full-time indie soon, and I wonder if working on days I probably shouldn't would fall in the same category. Do I give myself vacations? What if I hire someone for contract work? When do they get time off?

You have to give yourself days off and find what balance works for you (I typically try to copy how many days of my partner gets). The contractor should be paid fairly for their time, but time management is (typically) their responsibility. You're both your own bosses
