Skeptical.... What type of microscope they used? IMO Not X-ray, that will prevent them to stay in place and drift off also it must be cryogenic, to remove extra heat and stop them from drifting.

It’s called a scanning tunneling microscope, or STM. Let’s you see things with sub-nanometer resolution. It’s based off the phenomenon of quantum tunneling which is as close to magic as anything gets in our universe, aside from quantum entanglement (that stuff is spooky).

The two black dots moving around. At some point we see them split, showing a gap between them, and then they get back together. The other grey dots are the substrate in which the metal atoms are sitting on and moving around.
