One thing I am finding is that a lot of game companies are advertising only to board game fans, which seems weird to me. If you don't know what a legacy game is, or deckbuilding, or engine building, or even trick taking, a LOT of game advertising will not tell you. Weird.

I understand advertising will often be niche, but even on the companies’ websites, there is often a lot of insider jargon, is all.

Feeling that a lot when looking at stuff on Kickstarter and trying to imagine myself asking my brothers whether their daughters like resource-allocation or hand-managing. Even when considering getting something for myself, it seems to technical.

Maybe unlike video games, it's real hard to pirate a board game and people are more comfortable?

It’s a very insular hobby. We love our jargon and assume our games are beyond what most folks will play. It’s a shit take, but it’s common.

Yeah my sister and I had talked about creating a more board game website designed for less hardcore gamers but life keeps getting in the way.

It’s unfortunate that board & tabletop games seem to have gone super niche in the last decade or two. It being harder to be carried in physical locations, high product prices, & a reliance on crowdfunding has led to this kind of esoteric marketing with few inroads to new players

While there also, ironically, being more great new games to play, then at any point in history.

Boardgames are kinda a niche market thing, you can put in a lot of effort to grab a few out of the niche or just accept it and only go for those in it. Like selling sports cars, you could explain everything and try to draw in someone not already interested but not really worth it

I think you vastly underestimated the size of the market. It’s long since stopped being niche.
