Isn't Abby's entire side of the story with Lev about just that, finding solidarity with people and healing through shared empathy?

Did we need 20+ hours of game to get to this conclusion? In the 21st century? Abby had to experience being “the other”, nearly die, and saved by “others” to find her fucking empathy ffs. It’s a rehash of “now that I have a daughter I can finally understand sexism”. 🤷🏻‍♀️

A son* And I see him more as a little brother but that's not the point. I think it's a little more complex than that. I think she's in a phase of her life where she's trying to rebuild her life, after having been consumed by the idea of revenge for 4 years.

She's looking for a purpose and she listens to Owen's view of the world. It's a simple narrative. We've already seen that but it doesn't matter. I don't have a problem with Abby's narrative, it's Ellie's that I found problematic.

Hm.. it's only after a "good dicking" that Abby really "calms down" & finds her empathy...🤦🏻‍♀️ But I agree, Ellie's story arc is worse. I guess she couldn't benefit from a good dicking to progress (sorry, I'm really disappointed at the backwards narrative.. too many tropes for me)

Hmpf, I wouldn't go along with that interpretation. The fact that she felt guilty and felt compelled to do something good after that, to repair her wrongs, really made sense to me. And Ellie is in the same state of mind that Abby was for four years, when she was with Owen.

It's not an interpretation, it is how the events unfold in the game. Why does she feel bad only then and not when witnessing Joel's physical pain or Ellie's despair in the beginning of the game?? Empathie is not about being on the receiving end to understand someone else's pain.

To me she gets to the full realization during the time she spends with the kids. (Gee I don't remember when the live scene happens, if it's before or after she meets the kids)

She doesn't "spend time with the kids". She was about to die, the kids (the "others") help her, they collaborate to escape, & Abby leave them to go meet Owen, fucks, & only then decides that she can't leave them to die from the hands of the Wolf group & goes back to find them..

She discovers the depth of her racism by spending time with the kids, but it's not what makes her find her humanity and empathy.

After that, she slowly doesn't wanna fight or kill anyone anymore. The character is not perfect at the end of the game, but in a "more optimistic" view of humanity, I imagine her becoming more and more compassionate in the years to come. At least that's how I felt about her.

This is what is conveyed, I agree. But having a narrative where the character needs to lose it all to reach this conclusion is a backwards view of humanity. This is not how humans are and the fact that we keep on feeding this false idea in 2020 is depressing (& lazy) imho.
