I'm less bothered by this view than I am with how the game emotionally pits the player against himself to make a point any grown up adult can figure out in 5 mn. How it denies the player's agency at the same time is highly problematic, from a design point of view.

I'm making my peace with the game by thinking that a lot of players didn't understand the point, even after finishing the game. It was obvious for me right from the beginning so I suffered a lot. But many didn't get it at all.

It’s really not a new narrative though, and it’s based on the false & harmful stereotype that humans are just trash even at a time when solidarity is key to their survival. In 2020. Come on...

Isn't Abby's entire side of the story with Lev about just that, finding solidarity with people and healing through shared empathy?

Did we need 20+ hours of game to get to this conclusion? In the 21st century? Abby had to experience being “the other”, nearly die, and saved by “others” to find her fucking empathy ffs. It’s a rehash of “now that I have a daughter I can finally understand sexism”.

A son* And I see him more as a little brother but that's not the point. I think it's a little more complex than that. I think she's in a phase of her life where she's trying to rebuild her life, after having been consumed by the idea of revenge for 4 years.

She's looking for a purpose and she listens to Owen's view of the world. It's a simple narrative. We've already seen that but it doesn't matter. I don't have a problem with Abby's narrative, it's Ellie's that I found problematic.

Hm.. it's only after a "good dicking" that Abby really "calms down" & finds her empathy...
But I agree, Ellie's story arc is worse. I guess she couldn't benefit from a good dicking to progress (sorry, I'm really disappointed at the backwards narrative.. too many tropes for me)2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -
Hmpf, I wouldn't go along with that interpretation. The fact that she felt guilty and felt compelled to do something good after that, to repair her wrongs, really made sense to me. And Ellie is in the same state of mind that Abby was for four years, when she was with Owen.

It's not an interpretation, it is how the events unfold in the game. Why does she feel bad only then and not when witnessing Joel's physical pain or Ellie's despair in the beginning of the game?? Empathie is not about being on the receiving end to understand someone else's pain.

I was only talking about the "good dicking" to calm her down. Your point of view about Empathy is correct! It's a really interesting matter. I understand the narrative of the game and why it does it this way, but I also understand why you're mad about it. So I had nothing to add.

Tbh I remembered the "good dicking" part later. But it struck me bc this is something that women are told regularly when we are angry. We are told it will "calm us down" (Gadsby explains it well in Nanette). The fact that the game literally puts it in situation is really gross.
