I asked Rep. George Santos if he would sit for an interview with the House Ethics Committee.
"No. Oh, with the Ethics Committee? Of course. Not with you," he told me on his way to lunch.
that "every hour matters" as the clock ticks toward 6/1. He expressed optimism the two sides will come to a solution but dodged questions on the timetable.
Speaker McCarthy tells me Americans should NOT sell stocks or otherwise change their financial behavior as debt ceiling negotiations show no sign of progress ahead of the June 1st X-date.
“No, we’re gonna be OK,” he said.
"You are the change you have been hoping for. Your curiosity is what our generation has been waiting for. And your perspective is what the world has been yearning for."

Update: The meeting ended after about two and a half hours. McHenry and Graves gave the press the slip. We did see Graves on his phone briefly. Interesting that they didn’t come out and reiterate talking points. We are entering crucial phase ahead of Biden-McCarthy meeting tmw
Hill team:
“McCarthy told reporters that negotiations are paused until President Joe Biden returns from his trip abroad as he left the Capitol this evening.”

With time running out to reach a debt limit deal, negotiators will be "back in the room tonight" to continue working on a solution to the impending debt limit crisis, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says.
With talks at an impasse, McCarthy told me hasn't spoken to the president who is overseas in Japan.
One of the big sticking points is capping federal spending which McCarthy hinted
"We can’t be spending more money next year. We have to spend less than we spent the year before"
“After optimistic talk from both House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden earlier this week, Rep. Garrett Graves, who is leading debt ceiling talks for House Republicans, said Friday negotiations have hit a snag.”

We saw White House negotiators leave the meeting room moments earlier. Asked about the possibility of more meetings today and through the weekend, they said they are “playing [it] by ear.”
BREAKING: Rep. Garret Graves, who has been negotiating with White House officials on behalf of Speaker McCarthy, says debt ceiling talks are on “pause.”
Graves called the talks “not productive” and branded the administration’s requests as “unreasonable.”
“Biden’s decision underscores the enormous costs news organizations incur — and sometimes lose — to cover presidential travel. It also highlights a growing concern among reporters: that charters on lengthy foreign trips have become impractically expensive …”
White House reporters book a trip to nowhere. For $25,000 per person. Latest by me: https://washingtonpost.com/media/2023/05/19/white-house-reporters-president-trip-australia/…
With Pres. Biden overseas for the G7 summit, the White House and Congressional leaders are running out of time to avoid a debt default. Even with a deal, legislation could take more than a week to get through Congress.

Rep. George Santos said "of course" when asked if he'll resign if the Ethics Committee recommends it.
"Well, of course, I mean, I'm not chaining myself here. If the ethics committee makes that recommendation, that's a different story."
President Joe Biden is cutting his upcoming foreign trip short amid the ongoing debt talks, per a source familiar.
The m president will only attend the G7 Summit in Japan but will travel back Sunday and no longer be travel to Papua New Guinea or Australia.
“Biden's schedule isn't the only issue as the House is set to be out of town starting May 26 and will return on June 5, while the Senate will be away from May 22 to May 29, according to tentative schedules.”

Thanks to the amazing @rachelvscott for getting pressed into service - at the last minute - to talk about her reporting on the debt ceiling talks.
Hours before Treasury Sec Yellen will brand the debt ceiling stalemate as “brinkmanship,” Speaker McCarthy tells me:
“I started on February 1st with the president, and he wouldn't talk for 97 days … I think she's got the wrong person who's playing brinkmanship.”
Speaker McCarthy doesn’t call on Rep. Santos to resign and appears to stand by him — for now — until it’s litigated. Tells me “it always concerning” when I asked about the specific charges Rep. Santos faces.
