A reminder that, just as the West helped spawn groups like al-Qaeda through its efforts to use Islamism as a pawn against the Soviets, Israel helped spawn Hamas through its efforts to use Islamism as a pawn against the Palestinian Liberation Organisation. https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB123275572295011847 …

That would mean that BEFORE Israel "spawned" them, Muslims were peace loving and accepted Israel. What scenario would have lead to Muslims NOT trying to destroy Israel? You seem intelligent and knowledgeable enough to consider this seriously.

Note that I said *helped* spawn them. The article acknowledges that Israel is not the sole cause of Hamas, only that a series of its policies helped turn the group into the force it is today.

Don't hide behind words, you are clearly better than that. Everything that happens in the world is, in some way, a cause for other things that happen, but stating specifics like you did (with the other examples you mentioned) means more than that.

The question is whether there was a reasonable action Israel could/should have taken that would lead to something better that the Hamas situation. I claim 'no', your comparison implies 'yes'.

Not saying there is NOTHING better that could have been done (I have been a major critic of Bibi), but regretfully, Israel's actions have little influence on the Muslim sentiment - they are only used as an excuse, and this is easily shown in numerous past examples.
