What is the USA’s reasoning for blocking to UNSC investigation into what happened in Gaza recently?

For the US to agree to the investigation, it would also have to agree with the condemnatory language of the draft proposal, which would be akin to an admission of Israeli guilt with respect to the killings.

Example sentence of the draft: “The Security Council expresses its outrage and sorrow at the killing of Palestinian civilians exercising their right to peaceful protest.” Pretty easy to see why US wouldn't want that draft adopted.

Can they propose a different investigation with preferred wording?

They could suggest an amendment, yes.

But instead they would rather park any investigation altogether, right?

Right. They don't see the point in an investigation of Israel specifically, though they might agree to one that also investigates Hamas' role. As far as they're concerned, all that can come from an investigation of Israel would be further enmity toward it, which is already high.

If a draft for an investigation was going to be adopted, it would have to be drafted by a Western country, refrain from targeting Israel specifically, refrain from pointing out that appointing diplomatic missions in a contested holy city is illegal, etc.

Surely that would be more constructive. It’s only point scoring if you want the proposal to feature “an investigation + Israel is a dick”. All in favour! Do you want answers or pot shots?

It's a tough call. No matter who investigates, it wouldn't be impartial. The best we have is human rights groups like Amnesty International, but their access is limited, and in any case they tend to always favour the underdog, so would naturally lean toward Palestine.
