I think the problem is that what can be created can just as easily be destroyed, and nature has a habit of ultimately destroying any meaning that people try to create.

I think there's a difference between sanctity and stability. Humans become cynical when they expect to find a place in the world that never changes. That's why so many westerners seek out Eastern/native/pagan spirituality. More tension, more cyclical. Science calls it Red Queen
