Sure. Any fake 'idea' can be exchanged for real things, only if sufficient number of people believe in the fake idea.

Civilization is a game that lasts only as long as the players agree to keep playing. Money is a part of that. Just another unit of exchange/interaction. Artificial, yes - but also very real. Socially constructed does not always mean "fake."
