I don't think that utter barbarity toward animals is peculiar to the Chinese. For every example of a Chinese person mistreating an animal, there's an example of a Westerner doing the same. Just look at the conditions in which we keep pigs and cows, for instance.
I see. Well, it seemed from your original tweet that you were implying that Chinese people are inherently crueller to animals, but perhaps I misconstrued it.

In any case, excessive reports of animal cruelty in China can probably be attributed to the fact that it has the world's largest population, most of whom live in premodern conditions.
