Politics have been far more dramatic in the past - on the eve of civil wars for example.

Yes, I never said dramatic politics can't arise from legitimate tensions, just that *our* politics arise largely from concocted tensions, because our politics are generally a form of entertainment to compensate for an otherwise humdrum existence.

Possibly, although things were far more banal in the 90s and 00s and politics was extremely dull. I suspect it is is mass migration and other tensions brought about by globalisation which have caused the recent increase in political polarisation and drama.

Politics didn't become truly dramatic until social media became a thing. It seems to me that this is the point at which people began turning politics into entertainment. The refugee crisis and globalisation were indeed key flashpoints, but it seems any big issue would've sufficed
