It may seem that way. But, really, you have cultivated a more sophisticated set of expectations. Expectation _is_ perception. It's just that some 'expectations' (world-models) are a less-wrong, more nuanced, more explanatorially (sp?) rich fit with the world than others.

And I think it is in fact those experiences we are most accustomed to that we are most susceptible to bias - we tend to always overlook the familiar.

If this is true, why have we been most wrong for most of human history about that which is _outside_ of everyday experience? (E.g. the rest of the universe, the very big, the very small, etc.)

I repeat: Forget whether the label is universally useful. Because I agree with you that it's crude. But my argument works with any given 'assumption': pick one you prefer, in politics or aesthetics or biology or wherever. (Say, "man".)
