Either of these elements by themselves is not fiction: Beethoven's 9th engenders emotion, but has no simulation. A physics simulator has no emotion.

There are people who enjoy thinking deeply about simulations and there are people who enjoy feeling emotions and they often talk past each other when it comes to analyzing fiction. In addition, different emotional manipulations work on different people.

Yeah, this problem is exemplified by the way people view protagonists. Half the population see them in the first person, as avatars of themselves, and half the population see them in third person, as case-studies. Only the former group needs the protagonist to be sympathetic.
