False equivalence. The gays in your scenario killed no one. Many pro-lifers believe in their hearts that abortion is murder.
His belief that women should be executed for having abortions shows that he is not very good at forming opinions, and since his job at the Atlantic involved being paid to offer his opinions, it's not surprising they decided to fire him. Think of his firing as due to incompetence.

He was hired because Goldberg thought his abortion comment was just an isolated bout of silliness. When it transpired that this wasn't so, and in fact the opinion was one that was deeply held, he was fired for his retardation.
