Try arguing against strong simple ideas: "Where there's smoke there's fire" "Sunlight is the best disinfectant" "No one ever lost a dime underestimating the intelligence of the American People" Why? Because they're just manifestly wrong, so it tells you a lot that you can't win.

If taken literally, all 3 of those expressions can be easily disproved with counterexamples, but they endure precisely because they are not taken literally - they are poetic expressions. I don't think they can be used to show that people cannot be convinced.
